Our school is deeply invested in the teaching and application of STEM across everyday learning. Over the past 20 years, we have been recognised with numerous awards for excellence in STEM education. Pupils have enthusiastically engaged in hands-on engineering projects inspired by our local area and have taken part in challenges during the annual STEPS Engineering Week.
We have also offered an after-school STEM club, where children carried out science investigations and developed computational thinking skills through the use of Bee-Bots and LEGO WeDo.
Sustainability and real-world learning are embedded in our approach, with pupils growing vegetables through the Incredible Edibles programme and the Woodies Gardeners initiative. STEM exhibitions held over the years have showcased pupils’ learning, while coding skills have been developed using the LEGO WeDo app.
This year, we are especially excited to be applying for the Curious Minds Platinum Award, a prestigious and highly competitive recognition. The Platinum Award represents a significant step up from Gold, requiring schools to identify an area of STEM teaching and learning for improvement, implement a targeted action plan, and demonstrate measurable impact through reflections from pupils, teachers and parents. As a school-wide development project, it reflects our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement in STEM, with applications nationally capped at just 30 schools per year.
